Ballina lifesavers given award for quick rescue

TWO Ballina lifesavers have been recognised by Surf Life Saving NSW with the "rescue of the month" award.

Ballina Lighthouse and Lismore Surf Life Saving Club president Kris Beavis (pictured), and chief training officer Rod Balkin were honoured for their efforts in saving two swimmers in May this year.

The swimmers had entered the surf in dangerous conditions at Lighthouse Beach and quickly got into trouble.

However the quick actions of surf club members prevented the two people from drowning.

They were hauled into an inflatable rescue boat and taken safely to shore where club members had oxygen and first aid equipment ready and paramedics had been called.
