Ballina gets to take look at champion of the world

WORLD Brazilian Jiu Jitsu champion Juliano "Neguim" Pereira Macario is spending time training and coaching in Ballina.

Macario is in Australia for three months and was invited to train at the Fighting Fit Super Centre in Ballina by one of its members.

He won the world championship in Brazil last year as well as his state judo championships.

"It's been great to have him around and he works a pretty tight training schedule," Ballina coach James Jelly said.

"We're lucky to have him here and it's a pretty good thing for Ballina.

"He teaches BJJ, mixed martial arts and boxing.

"When he isn't fighting or training you would probably find him surfing on the beautiful Brazilian beaches."

Marcario has had seven MMA fights and won six.

The Ballina centre is also hosting a seminar on Saturday with Australian BJJ pioneer John B Will.

"A number of local clubs have members coming along and it will be a great chance to learn some new skills," Jelly said.

Will conducts more than 50 BJJ seminars in Australia and overseas each year.

He has trained and competed in Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, India, Brazil and the United States.
