Grafton's Barbarians breach Ballina's gates in hockey match
A DETERMINED Grafton Barbarians defeated Ballina 3-2 and Coraki beat Grafton Royals 3-2 in intercity premier league hockey.
At Ballina, Josh Wayneright was unmarked and backhanded a shot past Ballina's goalkeeper to lead 1-0 in the first minute of the match.
Immediately Ballina turned up the pace and pressure and were by far the stronger side but were unable to score.
In the second section Andrew Lloyd converted a penalty corner to put the visitors up 2-0 after 30 seconds.
Ballina struck back when Jarred Arundell provided outstanding build up for Scott Hamilton who has a shot on goal and a deflection landed on Sam Davis who scored the goal.
Ballina had five consecutive penalty corners and on the fifth Hamilton hit what appeared to be a certain scoring shot but keeper Dean Bromhill made a brilliant stick save.
Jacob Manhurt put the visitors in an unbeatable position when he scored.
Crawford converted a penalty corner late in the match to bring Ballina within one of the visitors but the clock beat the home side.
Best players were Dean Bromhill and Tyler Arundell for the home side.
In Grafton the visiting Coraki side were too strong for Royals, defeating them 3-2.
The match was played at quick pace and turned out to be a high-quality game.
Royals led after the first 10 and Coraki levelled and went to the break at 1-1.
In the second section Coraki slipped away to a 3-1 lead and Royals picked up a consolation goal at the end.
Goal scorers for Coraki were Matt Scurr, Zach Clark and Harley Brown.
