Ballina Boxing Day races cancelled

THE popular Boxing Day races at Ballina have been cancelled this morning after 120mm of rain hit the track during Christmas Day.

Stewards from Racing NSW walked the track this morning and while most of the rain had drained well, a single section of the track was deemed unsafe for racing.

Ironically, the sun is out this morning and it looks set to be a beautiful day.

Ballina Jockey Club general manager Matthew Bertram said the cancellation was "extremely unfortunate" for the club and a "let down" for the community who supported the day.

Today's cancellation brings to two out of four major events at the Ballina track this year which have been washed out, with another of the four majors, the Ballina Cup, also rain affected.

"Form our safety point of view, the stewards found it unsafe and cancelled the race day," Mr Bertram said.

"We had sold a lot of tickets pre-sale and we will of course refund those in full."

"From a club point of view, it's a financial cost, from a community point of view it's a let down."

The next major race day is on January 17.
