Ballina barista chosen for comp

BALLINA barista Justin Porrett has been hand-picked to compete for the crown of Gloria Jean's 2012 Australian Barista of the year.

The 22 year old will next week travel to Sydney to battle it out against some of the best baristas from around the country in the Gloria Jean's 2012 Australian Barista Championship Final.

Justin, who was chosen as one of two finalists to represent NSW in the 12-barista field, said he had entered the competition to test his skills against the best in the country.

"I've been driving up to Brisbane at least once a week to practice on their machines," Justin said. "It's going to be pretty tough but it should be fun."

The championship showcases Gloria Jeans most talented and creative baristas with each competitor required to present a range of coffees and signature beverages to the panel of judges.

Justin said his signature drink to win over the judges would be an orange flavoured coffee with an orange cream.

"I haven't named it yet," Justin said. "Basically I extract coffee through orange peels to give the coffee an orange flavour."

As for what makes the perfect coffee, Justin said it was a combination of the right bean and a love for coffee making.

"You've got to love it, and be weird enough that it excites you," Justin said. "There is nothing I'd rather do on a daily basis than what I do."

Justin said the fact that a bean grown on the other side of the world could bring a smile to so many faces was what attracted him to coffee making.

The winner of the championship will get the opportunity to compete in the Gloria Jean's Coffees international championship in India in October, as well as a holiday to Hawaii and the chance to win a personal coffee machine.
