'Bald Eagle' a skydiving master

They call him the "Bald Eagle" and last night he received the highest honour possible for people who dive out of planes.

Coolum Ramblers' Dave McEvoy became only the fifth person in Australia to receive the Master of Sports Parachuting Award, for his outstanding contribution to the sport of skydiving and parachuting.

He was joined at the Brisbane awards ceremony by the four other recipients – two of whom also live at Coolum Beach.

Well-known Coolum identities Col King and Faye Cox were not just earlier recipients of the award, they also were mentors to Mr McEvoy.

"I always looked up to them when I started jumping," Mr McEvoy said.

Mr McEvoy has done more than 8000 skydives in his 40-year career and there have been many highlights.

"They've all been bloody good, to be honest," he said.

"It gets better with time, but I guess (skydiving at) the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony in front of the Queen was one of the beauties – it was also one of the most challenging.

"Being part of the world record (with 21 skydivers) was also hard work, but memorable, as was making the Australian team."

Despite his huge number of skydives, Mr McEvoy said he still had "butterflies" before jumping out of plane.

He will spend the weekend savouring his award with the other four recipients at Rambler's drop-zone in Toogoolawah.
