Bail refused over alleged assault of police officer

A GOONELLABAH man who allegedly assaulted an off-duty police officer and two other men at Evans Head while armed with a beer bottle was refused bail.

Casino police Inspector Doug Conners said the incident occured at Stan Payne Oval on Saturday afternoon.

It is alleged the 36-year-old offender assaulted a member of the public. An off-duty police officer attempted to intervene and was also assaulted.

Police said the man threatened to smash the beer bottle over the police officer's head, before throwing it at the officer.

Insp Conners said another man came to help the off-duty officer and the victim, and he was also assaulted. After a few minutes police arrived and the 36-year-old man was arrested.

He was taken to Lismore police station and charged with two counts of assault, assault police, armed with intent to commit an indictable offence and affray.

He was refused bail to appear at Lismore Local Court in July.
