Baby Rachel makes baker's dozen for Bonell family

IT'S a girl.

Ray and Jeni Bonell were both wrong when child number 13, Rachel Bethany, came into the world on Wednesday night.

“We were surprised because we thought she was a boy,” Jeni said from her St Vincent's Hospital bed.

“Ray's been wrong only once, so when he thought it was going to be a boy, I didn't argue.”

Little Rachel weighed in at 3700 grams (8lb 2oz). She's little sister to Jesse, 18, Brooke, 17, Claire, 15, Natalie, 13, Karl, 11, Samuel, 10, Cameron, 8, Sabrina, 10, Timothy, 8, Brandon, 7, Eve, 2 and Nate, 1.

The family ratio is now seven boys and six girls.

“It's the Bonells' baker's dozen,” Jeni said. “The girls are catching up.”

Proud dad Ray said: “They're all pretty special because they are all a little bit different.

“Each child brings a lot of enjoyment, lots of love and there's going to be lots of sleepless nights coming up,” he grimaced.

Jeni is grateful her electrician husband has taken a few weeks off to help out.

“And then there's school holidays and no bus run, school lunches, no homework or any of that for a couple of weeks,” she said.

And you can't help but ask the obvious question: Will there by any more?

“I would hope so,” was the immediate reply. “Then again if you asked me when I was in 3½-hour labour I would wonder why I was doing this again.

“Once she was born I know why she's so beautiful and we just want to keep going until we can't any more,” she said.

And as for Ray, he says: “Thirteen's not enough.

“Depending on how Jen goes, 13 definitely isn't enough, that's a big definite.”

Ray says the certainties in life in the Bonell household are “death, taxes and more babies”.
