A MARYBOROUGH couple expanded their family to three only minutes before the clock struck midnight to mark the start of the new year.

First-time parents Angus Weir and Natalie Marsh had planned a quiet celebration at home, expecting their little boy would be born in early January.

Along with four other babies born in the busy birthing ward at the Hervey Bay Hospital on New Year's Eve, healthy bub Hamish Dean Weir was born at 11.45pm weighing 3320g.

"He'll have a good birthday," mum Natalie Marsh said.

"Until he's old enough to realise, we'll pretend all the fireworks are for his birthday."

Midwife Jane Wilson said Hamish was the last baby to be born in 2013 at the Hervey Bay Hospital.
