Grandma charged after baby slashed in Brisbane

A WOMAN has been charged with attempted murder after a baby was allegedly slashed with a large knife at a Brisbane home.

Police have confirmed a 64-year-old woman from The Gap will face Brisbane Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

The woman and the infant are known to each other. It is believed the woman is the child's grandmother.

The four-month-old boy is undergoing surgery and remains in a serious condition in the Lady Cilento Hospital.

The child's mother, who was visiting a Ridgeway St, The Gap, home with her baby, was woken just after 6am on Tuesday by the sound of her child crying in his cot.

A 64-year-old woman was nearby and a large knife was also found at the scene.

"The mother found the child in a distressed state with injuries to his face," Inspector Daniel Bragg told reporters.

"She's clearly distraught over what's occurred. She's provided police with all the assistance she could."

Police vehicles, forensic officers and detectives have lined Ridgeway St, which has now been closed off to the public.

"We've got a whole heap of police to determine exactly what has transpired. We'll get to the bottom of it," Insp Bragg said.

Inspector Bragg said the child sustained serious cuts to his face but that the emergency services' response to the incident was "very fast".

"As police arrived at the scene, the ambulance (officers) were carrying the child to the ambulance to rush to the hospital," he said.

"This is the worst case scenario. We deal in trauma, we're used to trauma. But probably the most affecting job you can go to is one involving a child.

"I wasn't here when the ambulance arrived, but I'm led to believe the ambulance officers who attended were visibly distressed by what they were dealing with.

"The police officer who was first on the scene, who did an amazing job, was visibly affected by what he saw."
