OPINION: Iggy Azalea leads the way
AS one of the top artists in the US in 2014, and the most impressive newcomer for the year, Mullumbimby's Iggy Azalea was the obvious choice to lead our Best of 2014 special story.
We have always wondered why is it that the national Australian media has such contempt for the rapper. Is it because her career developed in the US and she was a complete unknown locally?
Or is it because rap is not a music genre Australians are normally into?
Her career went so high and reached so many people internationally this year that it was impossible for our media to ignore her success any longer. Still, magazines, radio stations and TV channels were unkind to her.
I understand the Tall Poppy Syndrome and how Australians tend to turn against those who rise too high too soon.
But she is still our number one girl, up there with the likes of Sia, Gotye and Lorde in the list of artists from Australia and New Zealand who have triumphed in the US and the UK charts.
