Award for fashion star

MIA BRENNAN, 31, of Lismore, won Designer of the Year at the Voyeur Fashion Parade at the Byron Community Centre this month.

Ms Brennan, with business partner Bija Nicolson, runs Lismore-based Mimi Tree Shop in the Star Court Arcade, where the trophy she won and her winning designs can be seen.

Her range of designs includes everything from 'goddess to punk'.

“I draw inspiration from nature. My clothes are 100 per cent locally-made and I use recycled fabrics, even old antique tablecloths,” she said.

“The win is recognition of someone doing something different. It will do business a world of good.”

Her Mimi Designs label includes popular jumpsuits and a range of sassy and timeless staples 'you should have in your wardrobe', Ms Brennan said.

The Mimi Tree Shop stocks numerous local designers, including Bija, Rowie, Josie Baker, Tiger Frame, Kunda Kreations, Honour, Sha, Le Mou, Free and Bonnie.

Ms Brennan said the shop had been operating for 12 months and the designers have a local following.

Thrilled with her win, Ms Brennan said the recognition would give the business 'street cred'.

The fashion parade was organised by fashion designers Mark Harlow, Galit Massuri and Georgie Evans.

“They are popular with all ages,” she said.
