Aussie teacher shot dead in botched robbery

AN AUSTRALIAN teacher has been shot dead in a botched robbery while walking home in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.

Fairfax Media reports Gabrielle Maina was killed and her bag snatched about 10am on Thursday, local time, while walking on Miotoni Rd in Karen.

Ms Maina was a head teacher at Nairobi's Hillcrest Preparatory School, the school's website says.

Hillcrest said in a statement to Fairfax: "It is with great sadness and shock that we are writing to let you know that Gabrielle Maina, Head Teacher of Hillcrest Prep has been tragically killed whilst out walking this morning. She was returning home after dropping her son at a friend's house. Condolences to Gabrielle's family."

Ms Maina's was originally from Armidale in NSW, according to her Facebook page.
