Australian stars to grace stage

TWO of Australia's favourite actors and one of the UK's most loved comedians will be in the Northern Rivers next week.

Max Gillies and Samuel Johnson (The Secret Life of Us) will be in Lismore to perform a contemporary Australian play; The Haunting of Daniel Gartrell.

The play deals with the life of a reclusive writer, Daniel Gartrell (Gillies) whose peace is interrupted by the arrival of a young actor Craig Castevich (Johnson), who has been cast to play Gartrell in a biographical film.

In trying to discover the lost final verse of a celebrated poem, Castevich is led on a merry chase into some uncharted waters.

The show is produced by Straightjacket Productions and is being put on by NORPA at City Hall in Lismore on August 23 and 24.

NORPA artistic director Julian Louis said he was excited to have the show here.

"I think Samuel Johnson is a really brave and dynamic actor. He's best known for his work on TV but he has great stage credits as well.

"And Max Gillies is a legend of the acting industry.

"This is a Reg Cribb play and it's a regional story. It's got this very funny and yet dark undertone about a kind of curse on the land and I think a lot of people can connect to these kinds of stories," he said.

Writer, comedian and performer Ruby Wax will be appearing at the Byron Community Centre on Thursday, August 22 performing a version of her West End hit show, Out of her Mind, and also engaging in conversation with journalist Edna Carew.

For three decades Ruby Wax has done almost everything there is to do in British TV and radio; from Royal Shakespeare to Absolutely Fabulous.

In recent years she has completed a Psychotherapy diploma and a Masters Degree in Mindfulness Based Cognitive Behavioural and writing about her experi- ences with depression and bipolar disorder.

She has recently published Sane New World, a guide to saner living in which she discusses how we need to understand the workings of our brains to rewire our thinking and find calm in a frenetic world.
