Australian accused of running illegal surrogacy business

AN AUSTRALIAN woman has been arrested for human trafficking in Cambodia after the country banned surrogacy.

News Limited reported the woman, Tammy Davis-Charles, ran a surrogacy business in Cambodia and had arranged for more than 20 women to carry a baby.

The report said Davis-Charles, 49,  was herself a mother of twins born through surrogacy.

Cambodia's Colonel Keo Thea, who leads the police force's anti-trafficking branch, told media Ms Davis-Charles contacted Cambodian women with offers to carry a child for people from overseas.

He said she was detained for falsifying documents and acting as an intermediary in surrogacy.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has advised couples not to engage in commercial surrogacy in Cambodia since 2014.

"In November 2014, Cambodian authorities advised the Australian Government that the act of commercial surrogacy, or commissioning commercial surrogacy, was illegal in Cambodia with penalties including imprisonment and fines," The Smarttraveller website advises.

"Australians are advised not to visit Cambodia for the purpose of engaging in commercial surrogacy arrangements."
