Australia Day events in Byron Shire

MANY different events will be held throughout the Byron Shire to celebrate Australia Day.

Mayor Simon Richardson said once again, the towns and villages are hosting a range of activities for the whole family.

"It's a great day to celebrate being part of our wonderful Australian culture," Cr Richardson said.

"Whether you feel like joining a community breakfast in Brunswick or Byron, taking part in the family fun days at Suffolk Park and Bangalow, celebrate the Survival of Indigenous Culture in Byron Bay, or throwing a mullet at Ocean Shores, it's a day about fun and spending time together as a community."

The official 2016 Australia Day will be hosted by the Rotary Club of Byron Bay from 11am to 1pm at the Byron Bay Services Club.

The Australia Day address features local identity Warren Simmons.

Cr Richardson also welcomed this year's Byron Shire Australia Day Ambassador, Dr Clio Cresswell, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at The University of Sydney, who has established a diverse career as a mathematician, author and presenter.

The Shire's citizens of the year will also be announced on the day.

"It's always an honour to say 'thank you' on Australia Day to our inspiring locals who give generously to our communities," Mayor Richardson said.

Byron Shire will also welcome 20 new citizens as part of Australia Day 2016 celebrations.

The new citizens have arrived from Germany, Brazil, France, Canada, South Africa, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Russia, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and United States of America.
