‘Aussie Daria’ fancies chances over Kvitova
SHE might have become an Aussie only late last year, but there is no doubt Russian-born Daria Gavrilova will have the backing of the home crowd when she steps out on to Margaret Court Arena against Petra Kvitova tonight.
Gavrilova will take a lot of confidence into her battle with the sixth seed and two-time Wimbledon champion after her win over Lucie Hradecka in round one.
The 21-year-old has had a great start to 2016 after teaming up with Nick Kyrgios to win the Hopman Cup in Perth.
Even though Kvitova will start as favourite, Gavrilova will take some hope from their only other meeting.
Kvitova won 6-3 4-6 7-5 in Wuhan late last year, but the Aussie knows she has the game to beat her opponent.
Reigning champion and No.1 seed Serena Williams will take on Su-Wei Hsieh of Taipei on Rod Laver Arena this afternoon.
Williams will follow Maria Sharapova on to court after the Russian No.5 seed has played Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus.
Fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska will take on Canadian Eugenie Bouchard in the night session.
