Auditions begin for Ashes spots as Sheffield Shield starts

TEST hopefuls Usman Khawaja, Matt Renshaw and Jimmy Peirson will have a first chance to prove their credentials for the first Ashes Test at the Gabba next month when the Sheffield Season begins for Queensland on Thursday.

Khawaja will captain the Bulls at the Gabba in a day/night clash against defending champion Victoria.

He and Renshaw will be looking for some early season runs as they look to give selectors a big nudge for the Ashes opener at the same venue starting on November 23.

Peirson has been mentioned by a number of experts as a chance to take the gloves at the Gabba and beyond with incumbent wicketkeeper Matthew Wade under pressure after a string of below-par performances for Australia in India and Bangladesh.

Queensland has named pace bowler Brendan Doggett in the 12 with the Toowoomba product set to become the first indigenous player to represent the state since Michael Mainhardt in 1982-83.

Mainhardt, who more recently coached Doggett in the Queensland Imparja Cup side, played three first class games for Queensland.

Batsman Sam Heazlett was not available for selection after sustaining a shoulder injury during Queensland's last JLT Cup win that will sideline him for up to a month.
