ANYTHING emerging from the Audi Sport RS dream factory can give you butterflies, perhaps even more so when new top-end models arrive in Australia.

Just launched are the new RS 6 Avant and RS 7 Sportback in all their 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 glory, boasting of 0-100kmh sprints in supercar-esque times of 3.9-seconds.

Yet if you think such crushing performers are good for nothing but outright speed, you can convince your bank manager (or better half) that they have practical sides too, with an extra 30-litres of luggage space than before (RS6: 565 litres and RS 7: 535 litres) and efficient technology to keep fuel economy sensible.

Despite the whopping 412kW and 700Nm on tap in each of the cars, quoted combined economy figures of 9.6 litres/100km seem very respectable.

Needless to say, once owners discover the pure joy of squashing the loud pedal and such frugal fuel figures will disappear, but what's a supercar if it doesn't have a fair bit of a drinking problem?

Audi RS7 Sportback will hit 100kmh in 3.9-seconds, but weights in at $242,000.

The new RS 6 Avant and RS 7 Sportback have been given a refresh in line with the rest of the A6 and A7 model ranges, with revised front grilles, new headlight design, side sills, rear styling and interior layout.

Standard equipment for both cars also includes adaptive air suspension, digital TV reception, head-up display, 21-inch alloys, glass sunroof and a matt aluminium styling package.

So that's the good news out of the way, here comes the bad news unless, of course, you won lotto last night.

Before on-roads you'll be asked for $229,500 for the RS 6 Avant, and an even more wincing $242,000 for the style statement RS7 Sportback.

Both models are on sale in Australia now.
