Atletico ends Leicester's Champions League dream

FOOTBALL: The English Premier League's involvement in the Champions League this season is over after Leicester City's exit from the competition at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

The reigning EPL champion held Atletico to a 1-1 draw at King Power Stadium in the second leg of the quarter-final but went out 2-1 on aggregate after the Spanish outfit won the first leg 1-0.

Craig Shakespeare's side dominated for long periods but after Saul Niguez's 26th-minute header it was always an uphill task to turn the tie around.

Jamie Vardy, with his first Champions League goal, gave the home team some hope but three second-half goals proved too hard and the La Liga side moved into the semi-final.

Atletico will be joined in Friday's draw for the last four by Madrid rival Real after a controversial win over Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu Stadium.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick as the holders won 4-2 but the German team had every right to be annoyed after Arturo Vidal's sending off in the 84th minute.

The Chilean saw red in the 84th minute after picking up a second yellow card after appearing to win the ball in a sliding tackle.

The game then went into extra time with Munich leading 2-1 before Ronaldo scored his second from what was clearly an offside position.

That goal seemed to break Bayern and Ronaldo completed his hat-trick with his 100th Champions League goal with Marco Asensio sealing victory by firing into the bottom corner.
