Atkins on fire at Port Mac

WHILE the world’s best wave riders were preparing to tackle the much feared Teahupo’o break in Tahiti there was some surfing that was a little more low-key going on at Port Macquarie.

Evergreen Byron Bay surfer Al Atkins was one of hundreds surfing at the Australian Longboard Titles.

And in line with the NSW dominance of the event (the State won seven of the 11 titles) Atkins was the champion of the over-60s division.

Atkins dominated his age group in clean two-foot peaking waves to take the final from Danny Bond, Dave Pimm and Rod Menzies.

During the Lennox Longboard Classic earlier this month The Northern Star ran stories about the Cunningham family from Bundaberg who dominated the event.

The Cunninghams made it to the Australian Titles and were again impressive. Glen jagged third spot in the over-45s division while one of his twin sons, Ed, was also a bronze medallist in the under-18s division.
