Asylum seekers hot issue in Longman by-election

ASYLUM seekers arriving by boat are shaping up to be a key issue in the Longman by-election with a new poll showing the vast majority of voters oppose refugees on Manus and Nauru being resettled in Australia.

The LNP's candidate Trevor Ruthenberg accused Susan Lamb of wanting to "roll out the welcome mat for people smugglers and illegal boats", while the Labor candidate said resettlement in Australia was "not an option under Labor's policy" and the Coalition were "desperate" to talk about boats.

It comes as a Sky News/ReachTEL poll found 66 per cent of voters in Longman opposed people on Manus Island and Nauru coming to Australia, compared to just 40 per cent nationwide.

"Susan Lamb wants Queensland to go back to the dangerous policies from Bill Shorten and Labor that led to 50,000 arrivals on over 800 boats," Mr Ruthenberg said.

Labor is facing moves from elements of the Left faction to weaken its border protection policies at both the NSW state conference and the party's national conference this year.

Ms Lamb, a member of the Left, said the LNP was trying to lie about Labor's policy which supports offshore detention.

"The LNP are desperate to talk about anything except their record of cuts to health care and education in our region," Ms Lamb said.

"Resettlement in Australia is not an option under Labor's policy."
