Asbestos find forces car recall

ABOUT 23,000 Great Wall and Chery cars were recalled on Wednesday after asbestos was found in the vehicle engines and exhaust gaskets.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on Wednesday said it was monitoring the recall, which would involve older models from car manufacturer Ateco, but not recent imports or the Chery J1.

While the asbestos does not pose any risk to car owners in its current form, people were advised to ensure only qualified, authorised mechanics replace the gaskets.

Concerned owners should call 1800 114 672 for advice on Great Wall models and 1800 359 456 for Chery vehicles.
