Artistic skaters visit Lismore

A TRIO of artistic skaters from Lismore's Summerland Skate Club haven given an illustrious performance at this year's Queensland Artistic Competition, placing either first or second in each event they competed in.

It was a huge achievement for the recently re-formed club, and marks the first time the club's skaters have won medals in every round of competition during the year.

Zoe Pirlo, 10, won the beginner juvenile figure skating event and came second in the beginner solo dance.

Kiara Watts, a 13-year-old junior coach in the Lismore Skating & Putt Putt's Skate Stars program, took out the preliminary solo dance while placing second in the preliminary figures.

And Belinda Newby, 33, took first-prize honours in the masters solo dance and masters creative solo dance, and was runner-up in the masters figures.

Ms Newby is a skating veteran of more than 20 years who started out in artistic skating, switched to inline hockey, before returning to artistic skating three years ago.

She teaches the artistic development class as well as the Skate Stars Program at Lismore Skating & Putt Putt.
