AFTER collaborating with the band Wolfmother, artist Damian Loch has taken the unusual step of buying his own art work to support Byron Youth Services.

"It was a quick, spur-of-the-moment idea. I gave them my painting, then I gave them $1000, and it worked. Everyone is happy," Mr Loch said.

It all started back in October when Mr Loch donated his partially completed painting called "One Love" to the students of the Links to Learning program run by the Byron Youth Service.

The students studying events management put on their own festival, Spirit of the Bay, at the Youth Activity Centre on October 19, featuring Wolfmother as the headline act.

On festival day the band added the final touches to the painting and drew over the back of the artwork.

"It was great working with the band who put a lot of energy into the festival and everyone involved on the day," Mr Loch said.

The painting was then put up for auction on the internet with a $1000 reserve. If the artwork didn't sell Mr Loch vowed to buy the painting.

He now has the artwork hanging up at home and the BYC has an extra $1000.

Karen Ford, co-ordinator of the Links to Learning program at the BYC, said the extra funding could prove to be crucial to the future of the events management course.

The course has been running for seven years co-funded by the NSW Government.

But this funding has been cut for 2015, Ms Ford said.

The festival with Mr Loch's contribution raised $5500, and the youth involved wanted this to go back into the course.

It now had a fair chance of running again next year, Ms Ford said.
