The Breakfast Club Diaries a worldwide hit
AROUND the globe, hundreds of enthusiastic photographers take part in a creative morning ritual started by two Byron artists.
Artists Susan Gourley and Zoe Hudson (Trap) started The Breakfast Club Diaries Facebook group in 2012 with the premise of sharing one image per day taken during an early morning walk.
The group has now grown to more than 650 members from across the globe, and the two friends are on the cusp of printing the club's first book, with proceeds to be donated to the Fred Hollows Association to fund sight-saving projects. "One day Zoe posted a photo on Facebook of the sunrise that morning," Susan Gourley said.
"I was not a morning person, but that image was so beautiful I wanted to be a part of that time of day."
The friends decided to use Facebook as the medium for sharing their morning photos and opened up the project to the community to participate.
"We now have members from around the world sending in photos and there have been some wonderful friendships formed through the group," Susan said.
"There is such a sense of goodwill and integrity to the project. You do not need to be a professional photographer - there are people from all walks of life.
"The project has changed people's lives - including my own. I am now a morning person."
Choosing the Fred Hollows Association as a charity to support was a way of acknowledging "how lucky we are to have the gift of sight", Susan said.
The pair aim to raise $14,000 for the charity by producing a high-end 140-page book of members' images, with local businesses sponsoring the printing costs.
More than $6000 of the $9900 needed to get the book printed has been raised from local sponsors.
