Is Ararat Australia's Biggest Loser?

THE Biggest Loser is back.

Since the Aussie version debuted in 2006, it has featured everything from families and couples to singles and parents with their kids.

Now, we have Challenge Australia: solving an apparent obesity crisis in the Victorian town of Ararat.

After watching the first two episodes this week, Ararat is clearly a footy-loving, barbecue-and-a-few-beers type of place where the men, and most of the women, will call you 'mate' given half a chance.

Woolies manager Cameron has been painted as a loyal, decent town leader; but I have my suspicions his ego may extrude a cockier side. I am already on Mary's side - the biggest female contestant in the show's history; and seeing Sharon snap out of whinge-mode to repeatedly tip a tractor tyre over was incredible.

While it's great that this show is evolving and keeping fresh, there's one thing about it that I wish hadn't changed.

Commando, I love you, but enough with the words. Stop being so approachable, stop uttering inspirational phrases of support to the contestants and, dammit, put those dark impenetrable sunglasses back on!

The other trainers Shannan and Michelle can have their warm-and-fuzzy moments, but not you. Don't hug them, don't let the contestants hug you. You are a man of steel!

When you first appeared on the show, the very sight of you in your cammo pants and skin-tight black singlet struck fear into the hearts of all.

It was great TV. Now you're a muscly teddy bear. Your mystique has faded, your impact has diminished.

Please harden back up. Like Ronan Keating said, you say it best when you say nothing at all.
