Softball's new season

FAR North Coast Softball's new season will start on October 8-9 for seniors.

Juniors will play their first games the following weekend.

The deadline for nominations is September 26 and they can be lodged with registrar Lynne Brown at or phone 0413 112 011.

There are also plans for an Over-35 mixed twilight competition.

Lowndes in town

AUSTRALIAN motor racing superstar Craig Lowndes, pictured, is spending this weekend in Ballina.

Lowndes will be special guest judge at a Ute Muster at the Ballina Rugby Union Club on Saturday, organised by Ballina on Richmond Rotary to raise money for children's charity.

Earlier in the day, the three-time Australian V8 Supercar champion will appear at Ballina Betta Electrical, signing autographs and chatting with fans.

The Ute Muster at the Ballina Rugby Union Club in Kalinga Street starts at 7.30am on Saturday and Lowndes' appearance at Ballina Betta Electrical, around the corner from the rugby club, starts at 9.30am.

Top batsmen set to tour

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (AP). ? Star batsmen Brian Lara, Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan were among 30 players invited yesterday to make themselves available for the West Indies' cricket tour of Australia.

Captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul was also asked to join the three-Test tour from October 27 to December 2.

Lara, Gayle and Sarwan were among 10 players axed from the July-August tour of Sri Lanka because of a contract dispute with the board. The West Indies lost both Tests on the tour and three of the four one-day internationals.
