Young Luke shows cool hand for an early lead

By ADAM HICKS sport@northernstar.com.au LISMORE golfer Luke Ryan fired a one-under-par 69 to take the first-round clubhouse lead late yesterday in the Richmond River Amateur Championship at the Lismore Workers Golf Club.

With most groups off the course, the 18-year-old held a two-stroke lead from Darren Martin and Damien Jordan, who both shot 71.

Play will resume today with players needing the best total score over the two days to claim the title.

In the nett competition, Lismore's Shane Costello managed a 62.

Costello hit a four-over-par 74 playing off a 12 handicap. Late yesterday he held a two-stroke advantage from Casino's Daniel Rogers, who scored 64 off a 16 handicap.

The nett competition is still wide open and many of the 210 golfers are still in the running when the second and final round starts this morning.
