Yamba takes the triples

A FINAL flurry by the Cabarita Beach team, which won five of the last six ends, was not enough to stop Yamba's Alex Holland, Ray Miller and Frank Vogel from taking the Zone One triples championship decider 21-17 at Evans Head.

Tweed-Byron district title-holders Mario Azzopardi, Peter Craven and Gary Searle had earlier nudged out Northern Rivers' Paul Harris, Perce Langby and Noel Wilson (South Lismore) 24-22.

Searle was substituting for Steve Piggott, who has left the district. In the final, only one shot separated the two teams after seven ends. Then Vogel's Clarence River champions had a run that brought them 10 shots to make the score 16-7 after 14 ends.

With 19 ends gone, the Yamba trio led 19-10 and it seemed all over. But Searle and his team made their belated burst that left them only four shots in arrears at the finish.

In the early match, a devastating five ends by Searle's team when trailing 4-7 on the ninth brought 14 shots and a lead of 18-7.

Wilson's team fought back to be five shots behind on the 22nd end. On the last three ends the South Lismore trio scored four shots to one but failed to catch up by just two shots.

n With only the fours to be decided, there will be no play in Zone One championships for a couple of weeks.

The break is because of the State pennant finals this weekend, and the Compass Trophy the following weekend.
