Wills next-up in Brazilian event
BYRON BAY surfer Danny Wills will take on countryman Luke Stedman and American Tom Curren when the latest round of the World Championship Tour enters its second day in Florianopolis, Brazil.
Wills is in heat 13, with the first 12 heats surfed yesterday.
So far during the first round, the intense two-man duel for the world title has continued, with ratings leaders Kelly Slater (US) and Andy Irons (Hawaii) winning their heats.
Irons must place higher in the event to retain hope of a fourth straight world title and prevent Slater from claiming a record seventh crown.
Irons used a 9.5 point ride with seven minutes remaining to jump from third place to first in his heat and Slater admitted he was not at his competitive best in beating Australian Mark Occhilupo and local Guga Aruda.
Four Australians were also victorious from the 12 heats, current world no.3 Phillip MacDonald, Nathan Hedge, Jake Paterson and a relieved Joel Parkinson.
Parkinson was making his comeback from a knee ligament tear which forced him out of from the world championship rounds in Japan, California and France.
