BACKING a horse on Melbourne Cup day is often a daunting prospect for your once a year punter.

Indeed, even grizzled gamblers flinch at trying to pick a winner in the race that stops the nation ... from thinking about the election.

It seems everyone has a tip and a valid reason as to why their horse will win.

Some reasons range from the weight the horse is carrying, form, odds, trainer, jockey, colour, name and how pretty its strapper is.

So in an effort to confuse everyone further, The Northern Star has cobbled together six tipsters. Don't be fooled, dear reader.

Some of the punters, you can decide who, are industry professionals.

Others are ... not quite so professional.

So good luck negotiating the fields and may your horse win at great odds.
