When true love spans six decades

By Richard Forbes

Lawrence Ward of Jiggi believes that if you really love someone, you'll be prepared to take the good with the bad.

The 89-year-old and his wife, Jessie, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary at the South Lismore Bowling Club on February 5 surrounded by family and friends.

And today, they celebrate their 64th Valentine's Day as a married couple.

After growing up on adjoining properties at Wongavale, Lawrence married Jessie Axford at St Andrew's Anglican Church in Lismore on December 2nd, 1939.

They lived on their Wongavale dairy farm until 1950, when they moved onto a 200acre property at Jiggi, carrying all of the furniture by bullock team.

"In those days, we had no car, electricity, plastic or telephone. It was pretty tough but we'd do it all again. If you love someone, you'll always get through the bad times and enjoy the good times a lot better," Lawrence said.

The devoted couple has a long history, which they have shared with their family, instilling the traits of love and co-operation in each member.

Lawrence said that there is no secret to the success of their marriage.

"We simply love and respect each other," he said.
