Whale-watching is great for business

YOUR coffee may be cold before you see the spectacular sight of whales frolicking close to shore if Japan's proposal to expand its whale hunt is approved.

Greg Flynn, manager of Shelly's on the Beach at Ballina, said the whales were good for the business and a drawcard for the quiet season.

"The locals know that Shelley's is a great vantage point. It's a fantastic sight. We've already seen over half-a-dozen whales today," he said.

Regular customer Sue Charters travels down from Brisbane as often as she can during the whale season.

"I think a lot of people just come for the whales, although the view is phenomenal. I don't think that I would come here as often if it weren't for the whales," she said.
