Wedding guest hurt when gun prank misfires

By DOMINIC FEAIN WHEN Modanville woman Carolyn Daniell attended the wedding of a Northern Rivers' couple in Italy last weekend, little did she know she'd be gunned down and taken to %hospital.

It was a case of a practical joke going horribly wrong at the wedding of The Channon couple Daniella Ferrarin and Regesse de Gaston in the village of Maniago in north eastern Italy.

It ended with Mrs Daniell receiving 60 birdshot wounds to her abdomen and hand, and the bridegroom and the bride's brother-in-law being arrested.

The incident brought seven carloads of fully armed, Italian anti-terrorist police who feared it may have been a more sinister incident.

Mrs Daniell had been co-opted into a wedding prank where she and two others were asked to stand and object to the marriage at which point another guest (the brother-in-law) was to stand and 'shoot' them with a fake gun.

In a tragic double-twist of Shakespearian proportions, the gun turned out to be real and Mrs Daniell was wounded.

No one caught on until they saw the blood on her dress.

Merete Moystad, a friend who was with Mrs Daniell at the time of the shooting, spoke to The Northern Star yesterday from her home in Brussels.

She described the ordeal as traumatic.

"We arrived at the wedding of a couple from your area and Carolyn was asked by the master of ceremonies if she could help with the proceedings and Carolyn, in fun, agreed. She stood up and ... well, it's not something I want to relive," she said, still struggling for words.

Mrs Daniell was hospitalised for three days in Maniago where the doctors decided to leave the birdshot pellets to work out naturally.

She has returned to Ms Moystad's home in Brussels to rest before returning to Australia next week.

Ms Moystad said her friend was badly shaken and was concerned about damage to her hand, which received the full blast of the birdshot.

"Carolyn is a jewellery designer so it is of deep concern to her," she said.

Mrs Daniell is recognised as a local exporting success story and had been in Europe promoting her jewellery business Mondo Rondo.

The wedding couple are believed to still be travelling in Europe and could not be% contacted.
