Urinating truck drivers no wee problem, say locals

By MARY MANN WOULD you live next to an open toilet?

It sounds disgusting, and it is what some West Ballina residents who live opposite the Big Prawn complex have to put up with.

They say truck drivers are urinating on the side of the road and defecating in the gardens when they park their vehicles.

Resident Neil Brigden said it happened most nights.

"Some say 'sorry mate', but one bloke wanted a fight," he said. "Most ... say 'Stiff sh-t'."

Another resident, who didn't want to be identified, said he had suffered abuse from one truckie after hosing the driver down while he was urinating, and had to flee another who tried to climb the fence after the resident asked them to stop urinating in the drain. Ballina mayor Phillip Silver said he was aware of the 'unsavoury behaviour' that had been occurring on the street.

He said the road came under State jurisdiction, not council's, and that he would be speaking to the Ballina police inspector about the problem. The matter would be brought before the council's Traffic Advisory Committee meeting today to see if any alternative sites were available.

Inspector Dave Larkin said it was an offence to urinate in a public place and he encouraged residents to report the incidents and to record the number plates.
