Two off after wild brawl

TWO players were sent off following an all-in brawl in the second half of the Far North Coast Tursa Premier League soccer match at Maclean on Saturday.

Andrew Gray (Richmond Rovers) and Craig Anderson (Maclean) were given red cards after the brawl, which was sparked by an alleged foul on Maclean goalkeeper Terry Wratten.

The Grafton Daily Examiner reports today that Anderson pushed Gray away when Gray was standing over the injured Wratten, prompting a flurry of punches.

That led to players from both sides charging in from all over the park.

According to Bobcats player and Daily Examiner columnist Grant Neilson, the fight started when the Rovers player made a late challenge on the Bobcats goalkeeper.

"He came in with his studs up and kicked him and stood over him, so one of our players came across and grabbed the Rovers player's shirt to move him away," Neilson said.

"The next thing the Rovers player punched him ? whack, whack, whack ? in the head.

"From there players came in from everywhere and there were punches thrown by lots of different players."

With 10 on 10, the game really opened up, but both teams lacked the decisive finish in front of goal to steal a win and the game ended in a 1-all draw.
