Tribal drums initiate young guns

YOUTH triumphed over experience ? and came of age ? when Daleys Tribes downed sister club Daleys in the Lismore netball premier division grand final on Saturday.

The younger Tribes withstood a late fightback from defending premiers Daleys to take a hard-fought decider 40-36.

A solid first quarter, won 11-5 by Tribes, set the younger Daleys club members on their way to a memorable win, which points to more success for the strong Daleys club in coming years.

Up 19-15 at the main break, Daleys switched key players Nicole Krause (shooter) and Jane Wiltshire (wing attack), but Tribes stretched their lead to 33-25 by three-quarter time.

Daleys drew on all their decades of experience to close to within two goals during the last quarter, but Tribes fought back for the four-goal win.

For Tribes, attacker Alex Denshire ? named player of the grand final ? was outstanding, along with wing defence Francoise Naeyaert.

Tribes centre Kristy Durheim, playing against her mother Maria in the grand final, also had a decisive role in the victory.

Daleys, undefeated this year until the grand final, were well-served by Hayley McAnelly at centre in a solid team effort.

Lismore and District Netball Association president Lynne Sims, a Daleys member who coached Tribes, had nothing but praise for her young charges.

"There is no doubt Daleys younger players have come of age," she said.

"They went out against some highly experienced players and came through. It's a real credit to them.

"These young girls have been given a chance through the grading at Daleys, and it has paid off.

"I know the senior Daleys members are pleased to see these young players coming through. "It's fair to say that Daleys are set to be a major force in Lismore netball in coming years."
