Tough decision pays off at last

VOTING for the amalgamation of the Balmain Tigers and the Western Suburbs Magpies rugby league teams was one of the most difficult things Ballina's Michael Ross has had to do. Ross loves the Tigers. He played for them from 1965 to 1973, including 40 first grade appearances at fullback. Balmain had even helped him through university. But the Ballina High School economics teacher saw the writing on the wall. "I voted for the amalgamation at the extraordinary meeting," Ross said. "The inside information I had suggested there was a huge discrepancy in the amount of money the Balmain Leagues Club was making and the amount required by the NRL for a team in the competition." n Continued Page 119
