Top rookies eye singles

By JIM BRIGGINSHAW

TWO young Sydney mates, each NSW Rookie of the Year in successive years, will try to further prove themselves when the $6940 Summerland Singles starts at Ballina Bowling Club today.

They are Gary Pearson, of Bondi, named the State's top new bowler in 2002, and Peter Davies, of South Coogee, who had similar recognition the following year. Pearson will play today; Davies is drawn tomorrow.

Both have tough hurdles: Two of Casino RSM's finest, Brian Nixon and David Ball.

Nixon, the 2002 NRDBA singles champion and Summerland Pairs section winner last week, is in Pearson's section; Davies will be up against Ball, a multi-championship winner and one of the Northern Rivers' most consistent bowlers.

Also from Sydney is another young bowler, Paul Guilfoyle, of Roselands, who will play tomorrow.

He won't have it easy, either. In his section is 2000 Summerland Singles winner Ken Evans, formerly of Wooli; and 2002 Summerland Pairs winner and section winner last week, Phil Jordan, of Beaudesert.

Add to them Byron Bay's Brad Johnson, who carried all before him in his junior days, and the Sydney youngster will have his work cut out.

The 2004 winner of the Summerland Singles, John Lang, of Evans Head, will look for more scalps tomorrow.

He's in top form, as he proved last week when he went down narrowly in a thrilling Summerland Pairs final.

Surprise packet of that final, Craig Teys, of Ballina, will be out to prove his great win in it was no fluke; as will his pairs partner Jeff Dolan (Wynnum-Manly).

They are in different sections and will play tomorrow.

Neil Burgess (Lennox Head) and Vic Reynolds (Iluka), who between them have won more Summerland Singles than anyone else, are in the same section today.

Among the galaxy of other talent to take the green today are two-times winner Ray Pickard (St Johns Park), Joe Mills (Redcliffe), Greg Kelly (Tweed Heads), Bruce McNish (Musgrave Hill), Barry Ward (Ballina), Alan Carver (Coffs Harbour) and Alan Brough (Musgrave Hill).

In sections tomorrow are the likes of Geoff Hawken (Musgrave Hill), Terry Knudson (Casino RSM), Shane Globits (Paradise Point), Mal Brown (Casino RSM), Delio Santarossa (South Lismore), Brenden Frame (Casino RSM), Joe Krmic (Surfers Paradise) and Ron Erickson (Murwillumbah).

After three rounds of sectional play today and tomorrow, the post-sectional winners will move into the quarter-finals at 9am on Sunday.

The semi-finals will be at 11.15am, with the final at 2pm.
