Ticket rush tipped

JOHN Howard knows how committed sports fans can be.

He's seen it all while managing the Northern Rivers Ticket Centre for the past four years.

That's why he has hired five extra staff for Monday morning when City v Country rugby league tickets go on sale.

"We're expecting an enormous rush," Howard said.

"The amount of inquiry has been huge.

"We've had people ringing up from as far north as Hervey Bay and south to Goulburn."

Howard explained the lengths some fans go to to support their teams.

"For the trial match between Parramatta and Cronulla (in February), we had some fans who left Sydney at 5am in the morning to collect their tickets," Howard said.

"They watched the game and then drove back that night."

But it was a Bledisloe Cup rugby union match two years ago that really sticks in his memory.

"We had people camping out overnight in the street," Howard chuckled.

"We had to set up a TV to keep them occupied."

The Northern Rivers Ticket Centre is the sole agent for tickets for the City v Country match, which will be played in Lismore on May 6.

Howard said there would be limited tickets available for the grandstand priced at $35 for adults and $28 for juniors (4-15 years old).

There will be 7500 general admission tickets for sale, with adults costing $20 and juniors (4-15) costing $10.

"We think the grandstand tickets will sell out probably in the first hour," Howard said.

"And we think it will take about 10 days for the match to sell out."

A crowd limit of 9000 has been imposed on Oakes Oval after discussions between the Lismore City Council and the National Rugby League.
