Third youth charged over alleged Lennox sex attack

By ADAM HICKS

A THIRD Northern Rivers youth has been charged over the alleged New Year's Eve gang rape of a 15-year-old girl at Lennox Head.

A 16-year-old high school student spent a night in police custody before applying for bail in Lismore Children's Court yesterday.

The youth's barrister, Eoin Johnston, said the defendant's mother spent the morning in a police cell with the youth before he was led into the dock facing one charge of aggravated sexual assault in the company of others.

Mr Johnston said the youth had no previous criminal history.

Police prosecutor Brett Gradisnik said he did not oppose bail because of the youth's clean record and because two co-accused had been granted bail.

Magistrate Nick Reimer granted bail with a $1000 bond on the condition the accused did not approach the alleged victim or witnesses.

Mr Gradisnik said the alleged victim was not known to the youth.

The case will reappear on February 8. A 17-year-old co-accused will appear on the same day. Another 17-year-old co-accused will appear on March 8.
