Thieves take the shine off light-up

By DAWN COHEN

CHRISTMAS light envy has deteriorated into a crime.

Somebody stole a rope-lit reindeer and sleigh from Kerrin and Tim Crawford's Lakeview Circuit house at East Ballina in the early hours of Saturday morning.

"It was the only one like it in this area," Mrs Crawford said yesterday.

"All the others are lit with fairy lights.

"I reckon they had their eye on it for a while, because they took ours and left everyone else's alone."

At 6.30am, Brett Crawford, the couple's 28-year-old son, noticed electric cords were cut, and the family realised the decoration had been stolen. "I just cried and cried," Mrs Crawford said.

" One of my children had given it to me a few years ago. It was not cheap either. It cost about $200.

"It makes you not want to do the lights.

"I just want to tell the lowlife who did this to buy their own lights."

The couple have been lighting up their home for five years.

"Each year you buy more. This is heartbreaking," said the 48-year old.

Cords and ropes to an inflatable snowman were also cut, but the decoration was not stolen.
