Text message checks on author

IT TOOK a text message from Australia to alert Sarah Armstrong to the terrorist attacks on the island where she is staying.

The Mullumbimby author, who is in Bali on a month-long writing retreat, first heard about the Saturday night bombings when a friend sent her a text message yesterday morning to see if she was all right.

Fortunately for Ms Armstrong, she was in the mountains at a writers' festival near Ubud when the attacks occurred in the Kuta Beach area.

Ms Armstrong, who is on her fifth visit to Bali, said she avoided the crowded areas.

Director of the Byron Bay Writers Festival, Jill Eddington, was also in Bali with her husband and son for the Ubud festival.

Mrs Eddington was unable to be contacted by The Northern Star yesterday, but friend Chris Hanley said he had heard that the family was fine.
