Swell times ahead for surfers on North Coast

BYRON BAY surfer Luke Stickley isn't one to miss out on a good swell.

So with some of the best surfing conditions in months arriving off Broken Head on the weekend, there are no prizes for guessing where Luke was to be found.

Luke, 21, and his dad Glen were among a group of about 40 surfers on Sunday morning who got to experience just how good surfing at Broken Head can be when all the right conditions align.

"It was just barrelling off the point," said Luke, who made the best of the three-metre swell. "It's definitely the best surf I've seen in months."

Glen said because of a good sandbar which had formed off the point, the conditions were 'really special'.

"It was a big wave that just kept pounding from the point to the shore," he said.

"The water was perfect, it was crystal clear and there were dolphins jumping around. Everybody was out having fun."

If you missed out on last week's swell, do not despair. Another swell, just as good, is expected to arrive on North Coast beaches on Thursday.

Just how big the swell will be is anyone's guess, but waves of up to five metres are being forecast for Sydney.

Luke said chances were he'd be keeping his schedule clear. "I'm sure I'll be doing something fun," he said.

According to local surf watcher and journalist Phil Roxburgh, recent surfing conditions on the North Coast have been ideal. "We've got pleasant weather and consistent offshore winds. It's the perfect time to be surfing," he said.

"I expect the conditions to continue for the next month or two."
