Suspect package shuts down shops

By MARY MANN

A MOMENT of forgetfulness on behalf of a local man turned into a bomb scare at Ballina Fair Shopping Centre yesterday.

Shoppers stood stunned as police cordoned off a section of the centre and temporarily closed down seven stores, including Southern Cross Credit Union, Payless Shoes and Lowes.

Staff in the credit union had called police after a customer left a suspicious-looking package behind.

Police attended, with fire and ambulance crews on standby.

However, after identifying and interviewing the owner of the package at the scene, police found the incident had been one big misunderstanding.

"The package was a DVD player the customer had brought in to be repaired and had accidentally left behind," Acting Inspector Brett Boyd said.

The man was warned but not charged and the shops soon reopened.
