Super Boot

By STEVE SPINKS

THEY say you can never judge a man until you've walked a mile in his boots.

Well, now's your chance to get to know NSW Waratahs rugby union star Mat Rogers.

A host of memorabilia will be auctioned as part of the Waratahs' fund-raising dinner for the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter at Southern Cross University in Lismore tonight, with Rogers' football boots from the 2003 World Cup final the prize piece.

Organiser for the event, Howard Atkinson, managed to get hold of the boots through former Woodlawn student Anthony George, who is now involved with the Wallabies' team management.

The boots have a chequered history, considering Australia's eventual 20-17 loss to England in the final.

The Wallabies were playing one of their best matches of the season and were desperately clinging to a 17-all scoreline towards the end of injury time when Jonny Wilkinson slotted a field goal to clinch victory.

Rogers has signed both boots and they will be auctioned along with a signed photograph of the fullback at the World Cup final.

Other items up for grabs include a 2005 signed Waratahs jersey and numerous signed Wallaby jumpers.

The Waratahs will arrive in Lismore this afternoon.

It is the third country centre the squad has visited following stop-overs in the Hunter Valley and Armidale.

They will hold a full training session which will be open to the public from 4pm at Crozier Field.

It will be the Waratahs' final hit-out before heading to Brisbane for a trial game against the Queensland Reds on Saturday night.
