THE last Pura Cup (then Sheffield Shield) match played in Lismore was between NSW and Queensland in 1979. It featured a massive storm, a rapidly deteriorating pitch and a bevy of Australian cricket stars.
"Four days before the match a mini-cyclone hit Lismore," local cricket official John McMahon recalled.
"It brought down trees and did tremendous damage to Lismore.
"It threw preparation of the wicket into total disarray."
By the third day of the four-day match, the pitch had cracked.
"NSW won on the last day with Trevor Chappell bowling submarines ... he'd loop them up and they'd skim low," McMahon said.
The Queensland line-up included Carl Rackemann, Gary Cosier, Trevor Hohns and Kepler Wessels.
The Blues had Geoff Lawson, Steve Rixon, Rick McCosker, Trevor Chappell, Doug Walters, Len Pascoe, Andrew Hilditch and a young left-handed batsman, Allan Border.
Border later switched camps.
