Stephanie makes waves

SEVENTEEN-year-old Kingscliff High School student Stephanie Gilmore won the Rip Curl Venus Festival Trials surfing contest at Hossegor, France yesterday.

The victory has earned her a wildcard entry into the main event.

Gilmore dominated the final against Marie Pierre Abgrall (France), leaving the local in need of a combination of scores totaling 17.96 (out of 20 points) to overtake her.

The teenager, and reigning ICON Australia All Girls Surf Showdown champion, has won three out of four World Championship Tour trials this year, as well as winning the first WCT event on the Gold Coast in March.

The trials follow a round robin format where the four surfers with the highest scores overall after three rounds advance to the semi-finals.

The Rip Curl Venus Festival is the sixth women's WCT event on the 2005 schedule and features the top 17 women surfers in the world and one wildcard.
