Stella skips Ballina to another fours title

FOR the second consecutive year, Ballina Bowling Club's Stella Kelly has skipped a team to victory in the Northern Rivers District Women's Bowling Association championship fours.

Kelly and team-mates Helen Tootell, Betty Armitage and Hester Miller held their nerve to defeat the Casino RSM team of Fay Allan, Barbara McAuliffe, Joan Mason and Noelene Hawkes (skip) 18-15 in the final at the East Lismore Bowling Club yesterday.

The Ballina skip won the 2004 fours title, but with a different team.

That time she triumphed over another Ballina Bowling Club fours combination at Lennox Head.

Yesterday, Kelly rallied her team after they trailed early.

By the 13th end, though, the scores were tied 11-all before Ballina gained a slender advantage, which they held until the last end.

If it was a triumph for Kelly and her team, it was a second blow to Fay Allan and her skip Noelene Hawkes.

The duo were also beaten finalists in the district pairs only two weeks ago.

"They were bridesmaids again," NRDWBA publicity officer Denise Wallace said.

"But the match was very close all the way."

Ballina advanced to the final by defeating Bev Conroy's South Lismore team, while Casino RSM moved through by knocking over Maureen Peart's Lennox Head four.
